Beijing Lu

Beijing Lu, one of Guangzhou's most famous pedestrian streets, was once a road regularly used by government officials in ancient China. It was given the name "Beijing Lu" in 1966.

Ever since the period of the Nanyue Kingdom (203-111 BC), the area around Beijing Lu has been considered "official." In the past, people were only allowed to walk there; no carriages were allowed access.

Running from north to south, the road was separated into four parts during the Qing Dynasty (1636 to 1912 AD), including Chengxuan Zhi Lu, Shuangmendi Lu, Xiongzhen Zhi Lu and Yongqing Lu.

At the time of the Republic of China in 1920, the current Beijing Lu was enlarged and named Yonghan Lu, covering the four streets mentioned above. To memorialize Hu Hanmin, one of the heroes of the Republic of China, Yonghan Lu was renamed Hanmin Lu in the late 1920s, but changed back to Yonghan Lu in 1945.

Since 1954, approximately 335 monographs such as Flora of China, The Vegetation of Guangdong, Studies on the Tropical and Subtropical Degraded Ecosystem and Its Rehabilitation, Rare Plants of China, and Introduction to Restoration Ecology have been published. From 1978 to 2010, over 1150 papers were published in international journals indexed in SCI, including two highly prestigious journals, Nature and Science; 369 research achievements have been obtained, of which 264 were awarded prizes at various levels, including a first prize and a second prize National Natural Science Award and five second prizes of the National Science and Technology Advance Awards. The research achievements were twice honored as "Top Ten Basic Research News in China" in 2000 and 2006, respectively. 98patents have been filed, of which 49 have been licensed.

As one of the largest gardens in China, SCBG is composed of three divisions: 1) a nursery and exhibition zone, viz. the arboretum, occupying an area of 282 ha. It was designed mainly for plant ex-situ conservation with more than 13,000 plant taxa grown in over 30 specialized gardens, including magnolias, bamboo, palms, gingers, orchids and medicinal plants; 2) a research and residential zone, covering an area of over 37 ha. It features a herbarium conserving more than 1,000,000 plant specimens and a state of the art laboratory complex; and 3) Dinghushan Nature Reserve, which was established in 1956, the only reserve of CAS and the first national nature reserve in China. The total area of the reserve is 1,155 ha, where over 2,400 plant species are under in situ protection. In addition, SCBG runs several field research stations, including Dinghushan National Field Research Station of Forest Ecosystem, Heshan National Field Research Station of Forest Ecosystem, and CAS Xiaoliang Research Station for Restoration of Tropical Coastal Degraded Ecosystem.

At present, there are about 410 staff members in SCBG including over 280 professional researchers. There are 318 graduate students in either Ph.D.(119) or M.S.(199) programs. The Ph.D. or M.S. degree is conferred in the fields of botany, ecology, and biochemistry & molecular biology, while the M.S. can also be conferred in ornamental plants & gardening, and biological engineering apart from the three fields above. There is also opportunity for postdoctoral training and the present number of postdoctorates is 20.

The research fields of SCBG include: 1) Global change and ecosystem service; 2) Environmental degradation and ecological restoration; 3) Plant systematic and evolutionary biology; 4) Biodiversity conservation and sustainable utilization; 5) Agricultural food quality and safety, and phytochemical resources; and 6) Sustainable use of plant and gene resources. At present, there are 30 research groups associated with the 6 research fields.

In the past decades, SCBG has established productive exchange and collaboration programs with research institutions in dozens of countries, with the number of exchange scholars close to 100 each year. During the period of 2002-2010, SCGB successfully organized 12 international conferences including Symposium on Theory of Ecosystem Succession and Practice of Ecological Restoration, Third International Conference on Vetiver, Symposium on Theory and Methods of Carbon Equilibrium and Circulation in Ecosystems, International Symposium on Artemisia and its Allies, BGCI China Program Workshop, Second International Symposium on Family Magnoliaceae, and 23rd New Phytologist Symposium: Carbon Cycling in Tropical Ecosystems. Approximately 1,000,000 visitors from home and abroad visit the SCBG every year.

In tune to national strategic objectives and the frontiers of science, SCBG will further carry on fundamental, strategic and cutting-edge basic research projects in restoration and rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems, systematic and evolutionary botany, conservation and sustainable utilization of plant resources, as well as landscaping and horticulture. SCBG is also striving to integrate popular science education with tropical and subtropical plant research, species conservation, and sustainable resource utilization. SCBG is beginning the steps towards becoming a world-class botanical garden.

Times Museum

Opening hours are subject to further notice in event of special festivals or activities.
Admission is free of charge for daily exhibition. It is subject to further notice in event of special exhibitions..

A Case of the Urbanization Process of the PRD

Times Museum, formerly known as Times Branch of the Guangdong Museum of Art, was funded by the Times Property in 2003. In 2005, during the D-Lab project in the 2nd Guangzhou Triennial, the Times Property decided to invite Rem Koolhaas and Alain Fouraux to work together towards designing a permanent museum. The Museum was completed and put into use in October, 2010, later became known officially as Times Museum. It is registered with the Guangdong Administration Bureau of Civil Organizations as a non-governmental organization, which is under the category of non-profit institution.

Times Museum is not only an experimental achievement with great significance, which resulted from the curatorial concepts of the 2nd Guangzhou Triennial, but also a product of artists(architects)’ imaginary ideas. Through its open attitude towards urban landscape and city life, and which was reflected upon by the museum building and its space, we hope to prove that a residential building block could absorb the commercial, cultural and social content of urban life, as well as inject innovative and diverse vitality within. From concepting to designing, and till its materialization, Times Museum reflects the unique working conditions and fast-developing urbanization process of the Pearl River Delta.

A Gateway to the World of Arts

As a non-profit institution caters to the public and persists on academic independence, Times Museum aims at reaching beyond canonical programming to nurture creative processes and cutting-edge practices in the area of art, design and architecture. In addition, it endeavors to discover the potential “contact zone” between contemporary art and the public through the tight integration between various exhibitions and academic communication, as well as of art education and community service by a conscientious effort and, by that means, Times Museum could, on one hand provide potential opportunities and inspirations for artistic production, and on another hand, promote public awareness towards contemporary art and the production process of artists.

A Platform for Artistic Production and Communication

Times Museum is not only a place for exhibition, but also an arena to stimulate artistic creation and production. It’s a platform which bestows with abundant possibilities of artistic production and facilitates local art activities. It’s a museum that allows visitors to experience art in production as well as art in exhibition. It’s a site where artists can gather to exchange ideas and realize works. Furthermore, it’s a research centre and think-tank which initiates series of exhibitions, projects and public cultural events.

An Intervention of the Living Space

The different functionalities of Times Museum are distributed over different floors of a residential building, it became an interweaving structure of everyday life and the living space. The Museum entrance is on the ground floor opened to the street, which has a bookstore, a cafeteria and an art shop. With a height of 7.8 metres, the lobby is in good position to hold a variety of public events. Its office area on the 14th floor is converted from three apartment units. The Museum’s own elevator vertically goes through the whole building and directly arrives at the exhibition hall on the 19th floor. The exhibition hall is equipped with a 75 metres by 12 metres light-weighted mega-sized roof. From its balcony and two glasshouses, visitors could have a bird’s view of the city landscape of northern Guangzhou, which is a typical yet distinctive Chinese urban-rural converge area. Through its uniquely designed roof windows, the skylight provides natural lighting to the main exhibition hall. The roofs of high-rise buildings in the estate fit perfectly as visual elements of the exhibition wall. The mezzanine on the top floor is used as the archival reading room, while the basement is used for collection and storage.
